Juyand is the second most populous city in Tajikistan, close to the borders of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. During the Soviet Union it was known from 1936 to 1991 as Leninabad. It is located south of the Syr Darya River, at the entrance to the Fergana Valley. It is the capital of the province of Sughd.
