Thimphu is de hoofdstad en grootste stad van Bhutan. Het ligt in het westelijke centrale deel van Bhutan, en de omliggende vallei is een van Bhutan's dzongkhags, het Thimphu District. De oude hoofdstad Punakha werd in 1955 als hoofdstad vervangen door Thimphu, en in 1961 werd Thimphu door de 3e Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck uitgeroepen tot de hoofdstad van het Koninkrijk Bhutan. De stad strekt zich uit in noord-zuidelijke richting aan de westelijke oever van de vallei gevormd door de Raidāk-rivier, die in Bhutan bekend staat als de Wang Chuu of Thimphu Chuu. Thimphu is de vierde hoogste hoofdstad ter wereld qua hoogte. Ongebruikelijk voor een hoofdstad, heeft Thimphu geen eigen luchthaven, maar is afhankelijk van de Paro-luchthaven die via de weg op ongeveer 54 kilometer afstand is verbonden. Toerisme, hoewel een bijdrage aan de economie, wordt strikt gereguleerd, waarbij een evenwicht wordt bewaard tussen het traditionele, ontwikkeling en modernisering. Thimphu bevat de meeste belangrijke politieke gebouwen in Bhutan, waaronder de Nationale Vergadering van de nieuw gevormde parlementaire democratie en het Dechencholing-paleis, de officiële residentie van de koning, gelegen ten noorden van de stad. De cultuur van Bhutan wordt volledig weerspiegeld in Thimphu in literatuur, religie, gebruiken en nationale kledingcode, de kloosterpraktijken van de kloosters, muziek en dans, en in de media. Tshechu is een belangrijk festival waarbij maskerdansen, populair bekend als Cham-dansen, worden uitgevoerd in de binnenplaatsen van de Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu. Het is een vierdaags festival dat elk jaar in september of oktober wordt gehouden.
