Suwon[a] (Hangul: 수원, Hanja: 水原, Koreanische Aussprache: [su.wʌn]) ist die Hauptstadt und größte Metropole von Gyeonggi-do, der bevölkerungsreichsten Provinz Südkoreas, die Seoul, die Hauptstadt des Landes, umgibt. Suwon liegt etwa 30 Kilometer südlich von Seoul. Es ist traditionell bekannt als "Die Stadt der kindlichen Frömmigkeit". Mit einer Bevölkerung von nahezu 1,2 Millionen, Suwon hat in verschiedenen Formen während der Geschichte Koreas existiert, wuchs von einer kleinen Siedlung zu einem bedeutenden industriellen und kulturellen Zentrum. Es ist die einzige vollständig ummauerte Stadt in Südkorea. Die Stadtmauern sind eines der beliebteren Touristenziele in der Provinz Gyeonggi. Das Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum sowie die Zentrale von Samsung Electronics befinden sich in Suwon. Die Stadt wird von zwei Autobahnen, dem nationalen Eisenbahnnetz und der U-Bahn von Seoul bedient. Suwon ist ein bedeutendes Bildungszentrum und beherbergt 11 Universitäten.[3]
